Chromium carbide is a hard ceramic compound frequently used as a surface treatment for valves exposed to abrasive and erosive service, providing durable protection while maintaining cost-efficiency for demanding applications. It is commonly applied via thermal spray processes (e.g., HVOF) or weld overlay to extend the service life of valves operating in abrasive or erosive environments.

Properties

  • High Wear & Erosion Resistance – Provides excellent protection against abrasive slurries, sand-laden fluids, and erosive gas streams.
  • Moderate Corrosion Resistance – Offers some resistance to oxidation, mild acids, and chlorides.
  • High-Temperature Performance – Remains stable and protective at temperatures up to 870°C (1600°F).
  • Good Bonding to Base Materials – Commonly applied to carbon steel, stainless steel, and alloy substrates to enhance surface durability.
  • Cost-Effective Alternative – More affordable than tungsten carbide while still delivering robust wear protection.

Chromium Carbide vs. Other Valve Materials
• More cost-effective than tungsten carbide for moderate abrasion and erosion resistance
• Less galling-resistant than Stellite®, but harder for slurry and erosive environments
• Better temperature resistance than many standard metallic coatings, but not as chemically resistant as Hastelloy® or Inconel®

Limitations

  • More Brittle Than Metallic Alloys – While harder, it can chip or spall under severe impact or thermal shock.
  • Lower Corrosion Resistance Than Tungsten Carbide or Stellite® – Best suited for erosion-dominant environments with mild chemical exposure.
  • Surface-Only Protection – Typically applied as a coating, so base metal properties still govern bulk strength.

Common Applications

Slurry & Mining Valves – Used in knife gate valves, ball valves, and control valves exposed to abrasive slurries and tailings.
Oil & Gas Valves – Protects critical components in choke valves, wellhead valves, and pipeline valves exposed to sand or particulates.
Power Plant Valves – Applied in high-velocity steam and boiler feedwater valves to prevent erosion.
Refining & Petrochemical Valves – Reduces wear in valves handling catalytic and abrasive media.
Chemical Processing Valves – Provides wear protection in acid gas or mildly corrosive fluid handling.
