2205 Duplex Stainless Steel is a highly versatile and widely used duplex stainless steel grade for that offers an excellent combination of strength and corrosion resistance. It is commonly used in the construction of valve bodies, stems, trims, and discs for industries where strength and resistance to chlorides, pitting, and SCC (stress corrosion cracking) are critical.

  • High Strength – Offers approximately twice the yield strength of 316 stainless steel, making it suitable for high-pressure service.
  • Excellent Resistance to Chloride Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) – Far superior to standard austenitic grades in marine, offshore, and brine environments.
  • Good Pitting & Crevice Corrosion Resistance – Performs well in chloride-laden and acidic environments (PREN ≈ 34-38).
  • Enhanced Erosion & Abrasion Resistance – Withstands erosive slurries and high-velocity flow better than 316SS.
  • Good Weldability – Compared to other duplex grades, 2205 has good fabrication and welding characteristics, provided proper heat control.

• Stronger and more SCC-resistant than 316L stainless steel
• More cost-effective than Super Duplex (2507) or nickel-based alloys in moderately aggressive environments
• Preferred choice when chloride exposure and mechanical loads are both concerns

Limitations

Limitations

  • Higher Cost – More expensive than 316SS due to its increased molybdenum content.
  • Not as Common as 304SS or 316SS – Limited availability in some valve types.
  • Slightly Lower Weldability Than 316L – Can require post-weld treatments in critical applications.
