Peroxide-cured EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) is a high-performance elastomer used in valve seats, gaskets, and seals, offering improved chemical, heat, and compression set resistance compared to sulfur-cured EPDM. It is ideal for applications requiring long-term durability, stability, and resistance to harsh conditions.
Properties
- Superior Heat Resistance – Performs well at temperatures up to 150°C (302°F), compared to 120°C (248°F) for sulfur-cured EPDM.
- Excellent Chemical Resistance – Withstands acids, alkalis, water, and steam, making it ideal for chemical and water treatment valves.
- Improved Compression Set Resistance – Maintains elasticity and sealing performance over long periods.
- Better Aging & Weather Resistance – More resistant to UV, ozone, and oxidation than sulfur-cured EPDM.
- Low Extractables & High Purity – Suitable for food, pharmaceutical, and potable water applications.
Peroxide-Cured EPDM vs. Sulfur-Cured EPDM
| Property | Peroxide-Cured EPDM | Sulfur-Cured EPDM |
| Heat Resistance | Up to 150°C (302°F) | Up to 120°C (248°F) |
| Chemical Resistance | Better for acids & alkalis | Good, but not as durable |
| Compression Set | Lower (better sealing over time) | Higher (less elastic recovery) |
| Weather/Ozone Resistance | Excellent | Good |
| Cost | Higher | Lower |
Limitations
- Not Resistant to Oils & Fuels – Swells and degrades in petroleum-based oils, solvents, and hydrocarbons (use NBR or FKM instead).
- Higher Cost Than Sulfur-Cured EPDM – Due to enhanced durability and processing requirements.
- Not for High-Pressure Steam – Works well in low- to moderate-pressure steam applications but not in extreme conditions (use FKM or PTFE for high-pressure steam).
Common Applications
Water & Wastewater Valves – Used in gate, check, and butterfly valves for municipal and industrial water systems.
Steam & HVAC Valves – Handles hot water and low-pressure steam applications.
Chemical Processing Valves – Provides chemical resistance in acidic and alkaline environments.
Food & Beverage Valves – Compliant with FDA and NSF standards for sanitary applications.
Automotive & Industrial Valves – Used in cooling, sealing, and general-purpose fluid control systems.
