EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) is a synthetic rubber commonly used for valve seals, gaskets, and linings due to its excellent chemical resistance and durability.

Properties

  • Chemical Resistance – Highly resistant to water, steam, acids, alkalis, and some ketones.
  • Temperature Range – Typically -50°C to 150°C (-58°F to 302°F), making it suitable for both cold and hot water applications.
  • Weather & UV Resistance – Excellent resistance to ozone, sunlight, and aging, making it ideal for outdoor and HVAC applications.
  • Good Elasticity & Flexibility – Provides effective sealing even in dynamic applications.
  • Low Gas Permeability – Suitable for vacuum systems and certain gas handling applications.

Limitations

  • Not Compatible with Oils & Fuels – Swells and degrades in petroleum-based fluids.
  • Not Suitable for Strong Solvents – Avoid use with hydrocarbons, greases, and mineral oils.

For oil or fuel-based applications, FKM (Viton™) or Nitrile (NBR) would be better choices.

Common Applications

Water & Wastewater Valves – Seats and seals in butterfly valves, check valves, and gate valves.
Steam & HVAC Systems – Used in boiler and heating system valves.
Chemical Processing – Compatible with mild acids and alkalis, but not resistant to oils, fuels, or strong solvents.
Food & Pharmaceutical – White EPDM is often used in FDA-compliant valves due to its non-toxic nature.
