FFKM (perfluoroelastomer) is a class of high-end fluorocarbon elastomers offering unmatched chemical resistance and high-temperature performance in the most extreme industrial environments. It is commonly used in valve seats, seals, and O-rings exposed to highly aggressive chemicals, solvents, and extreme temperatures in critical industries such as chemical processing, oil & gas, and high-purity manufacturing.

Properties

  • Near-Universal Chemical Resistance – Resists virtually all acids, solvents, hydrocarbons, amines, and aggressive chemicals, including hot nitric acid, chlorine, and strong oxidizers.
  • Extreme Temperature Range – Operates reliably from -20°C to +316°C (-4°F to +600°F) depending on the formulation, outperforming most other elastomers.
  • Excellent Compression Set Resistance – Maintains sealing performance in static and dynamic valve applications, even under prolonged thermal and chemical exposure.
  • Superior Cleanliness – FFKM materials exhibit low outgassing and extractables, making them suitable for ultra-clean applications in semiconductor and pharmaceutical industries.
  • Long Service Life – Reduces seal failure rates in critical or hazardous process valves, minimizing costly downtime.

FFKM vs. Other Elastomers in Valves
• Superior chemical and temperature resistance compared to FKM, EPDM, or NBR.
• More chemically inert than PTFE, with the added benefit of elastomeric flexibility.
• Outperforms standard fluoropolymers like Viton® in extreme chemical processing applications.

Limitations

  • High Cost – One of the most expensive elastomers due to advanced polymer chemistry and specialized manufacturing.
  • Lower Abrasion Resistance – Not as wear-resistant as RTFE or rubber compounds like HNBR or FKM in abrasive service.
  • Softness Compared to Metal Seals – Less suitable for extreme high-load applications without reinforcement.

Common Applications

Chemical Processing Valves – Used in aggressive chemical handling systems, including acid plants and solvent recovery units.
Pharmaceutical & Biotech Valves – Compliant with FDA and USP Class VI standards for high-purity and sanitary systems.
Semiconductor Valves – Ideal for cleanroom and ultra-high-purity applications where contamination control is vital.
Oil & Gas Valves – Applied in subsea, downhole, and refinery service where H₂S, CO₂, and corrosive media are present.
Aerospace & Defense Valves – Used in fuel systems and thermal management applications requiring high-performance sealing.
