FKM (fluoroelastomer) is a versatile, high-performance elastomer widely used in valve seats, seals, O-rings, and gaskets where chemical resistance, heat resistance, and sealing integrity are critical. It provides reliable performance in harsh environments found in the oil & gas, chemical, and power generation industries.
Properties
- Excellent Chemical Resistance – Resistant to hydrocarbons, fuels, oils, acids, solvents, and many aggressive chemicals.
- High-Temperature Tolerance – Standard grades operate up to +204°C (400°F), with some specialty grades capable of short-term exposure up to +250°C (482°F).
- Low Gas Permeability – Performs well in vacuum and high-pressure gas service due to low permeation rates.
- Good Compression Set & Seal Integrity – Maintains elasticity and sealing performance over extended cycles.
- Resistance to Aging & Weathering – Exhibits excellent resistance to ozone, UV, and oxidative degradation.
FKM vs. Other Elastomers in Valves
• Stronger chemical resistance than NBR or EPDM, especially in hydrocarbon and acid service.
• Better high-temperature performance than neoprene or standard nitrile rubber.
• Less flexible at cold temperatures than silicone or specialty EPDM compounds.
Limitations
- Not Compatible with Ketones or Amines – Poor performance with chemicals like acetone, MEK, and ammonia.
- Reduced Flexibility at Low Temperatures – Standard FKM stiffens below -15°C to -20°C (5°F to -4°F), but low-temp FKM grades (e.g., GFLT, GLT) improve cold flexibility.
- Higher Cost Compared to NBR or EPDM – Premium pricing due to its superior chemical and thermal properties.
Common Applications
Oil & Gas Valves – Used in pipeline, wellhead, and refinery valves where fuel and chemical exposure is common.
Chemical Processing Valves – Ideal for aggressive chemical service including acids, hydrocarbons, and solvents.
Power Generation Valves – Applied in boiler feedwater and turbine systems requiring high-temperature sealing.
Automotive & Aerospace Valves – Common in fuel and hydraulic valves where heat and chemical resistance are critical.
Pharmaceutical & Food Valves – Specialty FKM grades are available that meet FDA and USP Class VI compliance.
