Hastelloy C-276 is a nickel-molybdenum-chromium alloy and one of the most trusted materials offering unmatched protection in extreme chemical and offshore services. It is commonly used in the construction of valve bodies, seats, stems, and trim components in applications with exposure to strong acids, chlorides, and oxidizing agents.
Properties
- Exceptional Corrosion Resistance – Highly resistant to chlorides, oxidizing agents, and reducing environments, including hydrochloric, sulfuric, phosphoric, and nitric acids.
- Excellent Pitting & Crevice Corrosion Resistance – Performs reliably in chloride-rich and acidic environments, making it ideal for chemical and offshore industries.
- Resistant to Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) – Maintains structural integrity under high-stress and corrosive conditions.
- Wide Temperature Operating Range – Performs well in temperatures from cryogenic to elevated temperatures (~1040°C / 1900°F).
- Highly Versatile – Suitable for multi-service valve applications where mixed or unknown media may be present.
Hastelloy C-276 vs. Other Valve Materials
• More corrosion-resistant than 316SS, Alloy 20, or Monel® in strong acid and aggressive chemical services
• Comparable to Inconel® and titanium in terms of chemical resistance, but better suited for mixed chemical exposure
• Often specified in NACE MR0175/MR0103 applications for sour service compliance
Limitations
- Higher Cost – More expensive than 304/316 SS, Monel®, or duplex stainless steels.
- Lower Hardness Compared to Carbide Overlays – May require hardfacing (e.g., Stellite®) on seating surfaces in high-wear applications.
- Difficult Machining – Requires special tooling due to its toughness and work-hardening behavior.
Common Applications
Chemical Processing Valves – Ideal for handling aggressive acids, alkalis, and oxidizers.
Oil & Gas Valves – Used in subsea, offshore, and sour gas (H₂S) service where chloride stress corrosion cracking is a concern.
Pulp & Paper Industry Valves – Withstands bleaching agents and acidic byproducts.
Pharmaceutical & Food Industry Valves – Applied where hygiene and chemical compatibility are required.
Waste Treatment Valves – Used in handling hazardous waste streams and acidic sludges
