HNBR (Hydrogenated Nitrile Butadiene Rubber) is a synthetic elastomer derived from NBR (nitrile rubber) through hydrogenation, which significantly improves its thermal, chemical, and mechanical properties. In valve applications, HNBR is commonly used for O-rings, seals, and seats where oil resistance, high-temperature stability, and durability are required—especially in oil & gas, automotive, and chemical processing environments.

Properties

  • Improved Temperature Resistance – Operates reliably from -40°C to +150°C (-40°F to +302°F), outperforming standard NBR.
  • Excellent Oil & Fuel Resistance – Suitable for hydrocarbons, lubricants, and sour gas, making it ideal for oilfield and refinery valves.
  • Superior Mechanical Strength – High tensile strength, abrasion resistance, and tear resistance for dynamic sealing applications.
  • Good Resistance to Heat & Oxidation – Enhanced longevity under thermal cycling and oxidative conditions.
  • Resistant to Steam & Water – Performs well in hot water and low-pressure steam environments, where other elastomers degrade.

Limitations

  • Limited Compatibility with Strong Acids or Polar Solvents – Not suitable for ketones, esters, or chlorinated hydrocarbons.
  • More Expensive Than NBR or EPDM – Due to its advanced formulation and performance characteristics.
  • Lower Chemical Resistance Than FKM (Viton®) – For extreme chemical environments, FKM or FFKM may be preferred.

Common Applications

O-Rings & Seals – Used in control valves, actuators, and safety relief systems.
Seat Seals & Backup Rings – In ball and butterfly valves, especially in oil & gas and chemical plants.
Dynamic Shaft Seals – Where abrasion and high-pressure sealing are required.
Valve Stem Packing – In select applications requiring chemical and thermal durability.
