Natural rubber (gum rubber) is a highly elastic and resilient material used in valve linings, seats, and seals, particularly in applications requiring flexibility, abrasion resistance, and water compatibility.
Properties
- High Elasticity & Resilience – Excellent flexibility and sealing performance.
- Good Abrasion Resistance – Suitable for applications involving slurries, bulk materials, and suspended solids.
- Good Water & Mild Chemical Resistance – Performs well in freshwater, low-concentration acids, and alkalis.
- Temperature Range – Typically -50°C to 70°C (-58°F to 158°F).
For water, slurries, and general-purpose sealing, natural rubber is a good choice, but for oil-based or high-temperature applications, NBR or EPDM would be better.
Limitations
- Poor Chemical & Oil Resistance – Degrades in oils, fuels, and strong acids/solvents.
- Not Suitable for High Temperatures – Loses elasticity and hardens above 70°C (158°F).
- Weak Ozone & UV Resistance – Not ideal for outdoor exposure unless treated with additives.
Common Applications
Slurry & Mining Valves – Used in knife gate and pinch valves for handling abrasive materials.
Water & Wastewater Valves – Common in butterfly and check valves for non-corrosive water systems.
Pneumatic & Vacuum Systems – Provides an effective airtight seal due to its flexibility.
