NBR (Nitrile Butadiene Rubber) is a synthetic elastomer widely used in valve seals, gaskets, and O-rings, particularly in applications involving oils, fuels, and hydrocarbons.
Properties
- Excellent Oil & Fuel Resistance – Performs well in petroleum-based fluids, hydraulic oils, and lubricants.
- Temperature Range – Typically -40°C to 108°C (-40°F to 226°F), with high-temperature grades reaching up to 120°C (248°F).
- Good Mechanical Strength – Provides durability, abrasion resistance, and tear resistance in valve applications.
- Water & Air Sealing – Works well in air, water, and some low-concentration acids and alkalis.
For petroleum-based applications, NBR is one of the best choices, but for extreme temperatures or aggressive chemicals, FKM (Viton™) or EPDM may be more suitable.
Limitations
- Poor Resistance to Ozone & UV – Degrades when exposed to outdoor weathering unless specially formulated.
- Not Compatible with Strong Acids, Ketones, or Chlorinated Solvents – Avoid use in aggressive chemical environments.
- Limited High-Temperature Performance – Not ideal for steam or high-heat applications (EPDM or FKM is better for those conditions).
Common Applications
Oil & Gas Valves – Used in fuel system valves, hydraulic valves, and oil-resistant seals.
Industrial & Automotive – Found in pneumatic, hydraulic, and transmission system valves.
Water & General Utility Valves – Suitable for cold and warm water applications, but not ideal for high-temperature steam.
