PEEK (Polyether Ether Ketone) is a high-performance thermoplastic polymer used in valve seats, seals, cages, and other internal valve components. It offers a unique combination of mechanical strength, chemical resistance, and high-temperature capability, making it ideal for demanding industrial applications especially in the oil & gas, chemical, and power industries.
Properties
- Excellent Mechanical Strength – Maintains high strength and stiffness even at elevated temperatures.
- High-Temperature Resistance – Operates continuously at temperatures up to 250°C (482°F), with short-term excursions possible up to 300°C (572°F).
- Superior Chemical Resistance – Resistant to hydrocarbons, acids, bases, solvents, and steam in a wide range of industrial environments.
- Low Friction & Wear Resistance – Provides excellent abrasion resistance and is often used in dynamic valve applications like control valve seats and bushings.
- Good Dimensional Stability – Performs reliably under thermal cycling and high mechanical loads without significant deformation.
PEEK vs. Other Polymers in Valves
• Higher mechanical strength and temperature capability than PTFE.
• Better wear resistance than pure fluoropolymers in high-cycle dynamic applications.
• Lighter and more chemically resistant than metallic components, with similar thermal tolerance to some metals.
Limitations
- Higher Cost – More expensive than conventional polymers like PTFE or Nylon.
- Not Suitable for Strong Oxidizers – Limited resistance to concentrated nitric or sulfuric acid.
- Can Creep Under Prolonged High Loads – May require reinforced grades (e.g., glass- or carbon-filled PEEK) for improved load-bearing capacity.
Common Applications
Oil & Gas Valves – Used in subsea valves, wellhead valves, and downhole tools exposed to high-pressure, high-temperature environments.
Chemical Processing Valves – Applied in acidic, basic, and solvent-rich media for reliable sealing and wear protection.
Power Generation Valves – Suitable for steam service and other thermal cycling environments.
High-Performance Control Valves – Common in severe service trims and seats requiring low friction and wear resistance.
Aerospace & Automotive Valves – Used in fuel and hydraulic systems where lightweight, high-performance materials are needed.
