Powder coating is a dry finishing process in which a thermoplastic or thermoset powder is electrostatically applied to a metal surface and then cured under heat to form a protective, and durable coating. In valve applications, powder coating is used to protect carbon steel, ductile iron, and aluminum components (e.g., bodies, handles, and bonnets) from corrosion, weathering, and chemical exposure—especially in water, wastewater, HVAC, and light industrial systems.

Properties

  • Corrosion Protection – Provides a barrier layer that prevents rust and surface degradation in moist or chemical environments.
  • Durable Finish – Resistant to chipping, abrasion, and UV exposure, ensuring long service life in exposed conditions.
  • Uniform Coating Thickness – Offers a smooth, even layer with consistent coverage, even on complex geometries.
  • Environmentally Friendly – Contains no solvents or VOCs, unlike liquid paint systems.
  • Aesthetic & Colour-Coding – Enables colour customization for safety, identification, or branding purposes.

Limitations

  • Not Suitable for Internal Wetted Surfaces – Generally not used for media-contact areas due to risk of chemical incompatibility or delamination.
  • Temperature Limitations – Most coatings are rated up to ~120°C to 200°C (248°F to 392°F); high-heat applications may require alternative coatings.
  • Surface Prep Required – Effective performance depends on proper cleaning and pre-treatment, such as blasting or phosphating.
  • Not Chemically Inert – Less resistant to strong acids, solvents, or aggressive chemicals compared to PTFE or epoxy coatings.

Common Applications

Valve Bodies – Especially for iron or carbon steel valves in municipal water and HVAC systems.
Bonnet Covers & Actuator Housings – For protection against oxidation and environmental wear.
Levers, Handles & Fasteners – Improve grip and prevent corrosion in outdoor or damp installations.
External Surfaces on Control Valves – For visual appeal and general chemical protection.
