317 stainless steel is a molybdenum-bearing austenitic stainless steel with higher corrosion resistance than 316 stainless steel, making it ideal for highly aggressive chemical and marine environments where 316 SS may not provide sufficient durability.
Properties
- Superior Corrosion Resistance – More resistant to acidic, chloride-rich, and sulfur-containing environments than 316 SS.
- Higher Molybdenum Content (3-4%) – Provides enhanced resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride and sulfuric acid environments.
- High Strength & Durability – Maintains structural integrity under high pressure and extreme conditions.
- Temperature Resistance – Withstands temperatures up to 870°C (1600°F) in continuous service.
- Good Weldability & Fabrication – Can be welded and machined without significant carbide precipitation concerns.
317 vs. 316 Stainless Steel
• 317 SS has more molybdenum (3-4%), making it more resistant to corrosion and pitting than 316 SS (2-3% Mo)
• 316 SS is more widely used and slightly more affordable, but not as resistant to aggressive acids and chlorides
Limitations
- Higher Cost – More expensive than 316 SS due to its increased molybdenum content.
- Not as Common as 304 or 316 SS – Limited availability in some valve types.
- Slightly Lower Weldability Than 316L – Can require post-weld treatments in critical applications.
Common Applications
Chemical Processing Valves – Used in acidic, high-chloride, and sulfuric acid environments.
Pulp & Paper Industry Valves – Resists corrosive chemicals and bleaching agents used in paper production.
Marine & Offshore Valves – Offers better saltwater resistance than 316 SS.
Pharmaceutical & Food Processing Valves – Suitable for sanitary and high-purity applications.
Power & Industrial Valves – Performs well in high-temperature and high-pressure systems.
