2507 Super Duplex Stainless Steel is a high-performance duplex alloy that offers exceptional strength and corrosion resistance, particularly in chloride-rich, aggressive environments. It is widely used in valve bodies, stems, trims, and critical components where extreme durability and protection against pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking (SCC) are required.
Properties
- Very High Strength – Approximately 2.5 times the yield strength of 316 stainless steel, making it ideal for high-pressure and high-stress valve applications.
- Outstanding Corrosion Resistance – Exceptional resistance to chloride-induced pitting, crevice corrosion, and SCC, with a PREN (Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number) > 40.
- Excellent Abrasion & Erosion Resistance – Well-suited for high-velocity, erosive, and abrasive flow conditions.
- Good Weldability & Fabrication – With proper heat control, it can be welded while maintaining corrosion resistance and mechanical properties.
- Long Service Life in Harsh Environments – Commonly specified for critical offshore, subsea, and aggressive chemical applications.
2507 Super Duplex vs. Other Valve Materials
• Greater corrosion and pitting resistance than 2205 Duplex or 316 SS
• More cost-effective than Hastelloy® or Inconel® in many offshore and marine applications
• Superior mechanical strength over austenitic stainless steels, reducing valve weight for the same pressure rating
Limitations
- Higher Cost – More expensive than 2205 Duplex and 316 SS, but less costly than nickel-based alloys.
- Heat Sensitivity – Requires strict welding and fabrication controls to avoid intermetallic phase formation, which can reduce corrosion resistance.
- Less Tough at Cryogenic Temperatures – Similar to other duplex steels, it is less ductile than austenitic grades in cryogenic service.
Common Applications
Subsea & Offshore Valves – Ideal for seawater, brine, and splash zone service under high pressure and chloride exposure.
Oil & Gas Valves – Used in wellhead, choke, and pipeline valves handling H₂S, CO₂, and produced water.
Desalination & Water Treatment Valves – Essential for high-chloride water systems such as RO (reverse osmosis) plants.
Chemical Processing Valves – Applied in chloride-rich and aggressive chemical handling systems.
Mining & Slurry Valves – Suitable for abrasive and corrosive slurry environments where both erosion and corrosion resistance are needed.
