Tungsten carbide is a cemented carbide composite material, made by combining tungsten with carbon and a metallic binder (commonly cobalt or nickel) to provide extreme hardness and superior wear resistance. It is widely used on valve trims, seats, balls, and discs for valves operating in severe abrasion, erosion, and high-pressure environments where extreme wear resistance is critical to reliability.
Properties
- Exceptional Hardness – Among the hardest materials used in valves (up to ~1600-2200 HV on the Vickers scale), offering outstanding resistance to wear and erosion.
- Superior Abrasion Resistance – Ideal for applications involving slurries, sand-laden fluids, or particulate-laden flows.
- High-Pressure & Impact Resistance – Maintains structural integrity under extreme pressures and mechanical shock.
- Temperature Stability – Performs well at elevated temperatures up to ~550°C (1022°F) in dynamic sealing environments.
- Long Service Life – Extends the operational lifespan of valves operating in harsh, abrasive, or erosive environments.
Common Forms of Tungsten Carbide in Valves
• Solid Tungsten Carbide Seats and Balls
• Tungsten Carbide-Coated Components (via HVOF or thermal spray)
• Tungsten Carbide Inserts in Valve Trims
Tungsten Carbide vs. Other Valve Materials
• Harder and more wear-resistant than Stellite®, Inconel®, or hardened steels
• Less ductile than cobalt-based alloys, making it more prone to brittle failure under certain dynamic loads
• Performs better in abrasive environments than chromium carbide or standard stainless steels
Limitations
- Brittle Compared to Metallic Alloys – Can fracture under extreme impact or thermal shock.
- Higher Cost – More expensive than hardened steels or other hard-facing materials like Stellite®.
- Difficult to Machine – Requires grinding and specialized equipment due to its extreme hardness.
Common Applications
Knife Gate & Slurry Valves – Seats, gate plates, and liners in mining and mineral processing.
Ash Handling & Power Plant Valves – Components in bottom ash, fly ash, and coal slurry systems.
Cement & Aggregate Valves – Applied in abrasive dry bulk handling.
