XM-19, also known as Nitronic® 50, is a high-strength, corrosion-resistant austenitic stainless steel used in valve stems, shafts, seats, and trim components. It offers superior corrosion resistance compared to 316 SS, along with high strength and excellent wear resistance, making it ideal for marine, chemical, cryogenic, and high-performance industrial applications.
Properties
- Superior Corrosion Resistance – Outperforms 316 and 317 stainless steel in marine, chemical, and chloride environments.
- High Strength & Toughness – Twice the yield strength of 304 and 316 SS, even in an annealed condition.
- Non-Magnetic in Annealed Condition – Unlike 17-4 PH, remains non-magnetic, useful in applications requiring non-magnetic properties.
- Excellent Wear & Galling Resistance – Reduces friction and wear in high-cycle valve operations.
- Good High-Temperature & Cryogenic Performance – Maintains strength at elevated temperatures and low-temperature (cryogenic) conditions.
XM-19 vs. Other Valve Materials
• More corrosion-resistant than 316 SS for chlorides, ideal for marine & chemical applications
• Higher strength than 316 SS & 304 SS and can be used in high-load applications without additional heat treatment
• Non-magnetic (annealed condition) unlike 17-4 PH and duplex stainless steels, making it suitable for sensitive applications
Limitations
- Higher Cost Than 316 SS – More expensive due to enhanced alloying elements (higher nitrogen, chromium, and molybdenum).
- Not as Hard as 17-4 PH – While stronger than 316 SS, it does not reach the same hardness levels as precipitation-hardened steels.
- Work Hardening Can Occur – Requires special machining considerations due to increased work hardening rates.
Common Applications
Valve Stems & Shafts – Used in control valves, ball valves, and butterfly valves for extended durability.
Corrosion-Resistant Seats & Trim Components – Ideal for chemical processing and marine environments.
Cryogenic Valves – Performs well in low-temperature applications such as LNG and liquid nitrogen handling.
Offshore & Marine Valves – Resists saltwater corrosion and biofouling in subsea and shipboard applications.
Nuclear & Power Plant Valves – Suitable for high-temperature and high-pressure applications.
